Welcome for national rainbow laces campaign

Minister for Commonwealth Games Shona Robison has welcomed a national campaign to support gay footballers.

Stonewall Scotland – a leading lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender charity – is challenging football players across the country to show their support for gay players by wearing rainbow coloured bootlaces at all matches this weekend.

The charity has distributed the laces to all Scottish teams. Its message “Right Behind Gay Footballers” is designed to kick start a change in attitudes and make our national game more gay-friendly.

Shona Robison said:

“Football is an integral part of Scottish society and, as such, it should reflect this society. The Scottish Government wants to improve diversity in every walk of life and drive forward progress in a modern and equal 21^st century for everyone.

“Discrimination in all forms and at all levels of society is unacceptable. While it is up to individual clubs to take part, this campaign is an excellent opportunity to start a discussion and change attitudes in our society.”

Director of Stonewall Scotland Colin Macfarlane added:

“It’s time for football clubs and players to step up and make a visible stand against homophobia in our national game. By wearing rainbow laces players will send a message of support to gay players and can begin to drag football in to the 21st century.”
